Eyeglasses are indispensable for millions of Americans. Nearly all eyeglass wearers rely on opticians to make sure they are getting the glasses in contacts they need. You can be part of it all by becoming an optician. We can help with our ABO National Opticianry Competency Exam (NOCE) Prep course.

You will need to take and pass the exam to become a licensed optician. Our course includes 64 hours of work you can complete at your own pace. After signing up, you will have access to the course for 12 months.
More About the Opticianry Career
An optician is an eye care professional who works closely with optometrists and ophthalmologists. They ensure that patients are receiving the right prescription glasses and contacts. They also work with patients to correctly fit the glasses and contacts they order.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Fitting – Opticians must take precise requirements of a patient’s face and eyes to ensure that eyeglasses will fit properly.
- Lens Dispensing – During the ordering process, the optician assists a patient in selecting the correct lenses. They ensure lenses meet prescription requirements and that they include any features the patient requests.
- Adjustments – After eyeglasses arrive from the manufacturer, the optician makes adjustments to ensure they fit properly. Opticians also address minor repair issues.
- Education – Opticians educate patients about their eyeglasses and contacts. They teach patients how to use the products, how to clean them, and how to care for them properly.
Opticianry training can be accomplished through a formal degree program or through an online exam prep course like the one we offer. Our course covers everything future opticians need to know including the different parts and types of eyewear frames, how to properly fit eyewear, and how mathematical principles are applied in basic optics. Our students even learn to identify the characteristics of ophthalmic lenses.
Again, completing our prep training course prepares a student to sit for the exam. Upon passing the exam, the ABO will certify the student. Certification goes a long way toward helping new opticians find employment.
A Strong Employment Outlook
As for employment opportunities, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) estimates that some 6,400 new optician jobs will open up every year through 2032. Some of the positions will be brand-new while others will be the result of retirements and career moves. Needless to say, there will be jobs out there.
The BLS currently pegs the median wage for opticians at $44,170 annually. Some employers will pay more, others will pay less. Regardless, optician jobs are considered stable employment and tend to come with a good selection of benefits.
All you need to take our course and sit for the exam is a high school diploma or GED. However, it has been our experience that future opticians with at least a couple of years of hands-on experience tend to be more successful.
Training Is Your Key
Training is your key to success in opticianry. With training, you are better prepared to sit for the certification exam. We can get you where you need to be with our self-paced ABO National Opticianry Competency Exam (NOCE) Prep course.
