Military Spouses: Train With Us and Use Your MyCAA Scholarship

The U.S. military offers a number of scholarship programs designed to help service members pay for education beyond their military service. If you are a military spouse, did you know there is a program for you as well? It’s called the My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA). Even better, you can use your MyCAA funds to pay for ProTrain career certification training.

We believe in supporting military families in every way that we can. We also know that many military spouses work while their significant others serve our country. Working can be a balancing act for military spouses simply because their lives are always subject to change. If we can help, even a little bit, by supporting MyCAA and the spouses it helps, we are more than happy to do so.

More About the Program

MyCAA is a workforce scholarship program administered by the Department of Defense. It is designed for military spouses and provides up to $4,000 in financial assistance over a three-year period. Each fiscal year, eligible spouses can apply a maximum of $2,000 to education and training. If all of a spouse’s My Career Advancement Account Scholarship funds are not used within three years from the start date of the first course on their first financial assistance request, those funds will be forfeited.

The financial assistance enables military spouses to earn new licenses, certifications, or degrees with less of a personal financial burden. It is intended to help spouses with employment in fields that are highly portable, giving them opportunities to continue working even when the military moves their families.

The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship program is open to spouses of active-duty service members, National Guard and reserve members under qualifying Title 10 orders in pay grades E-1 through E-9, W-1 through W-3 and O-1 through O-3. The authorization of the fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act allows military spouses to remain eligible for the financial assistance offered through the MyCAA Scholarship if their sponsor is promoted above the eligible ranks as long as the spouse has an approved Education and Training Plan in place.

  • Spouses of service members in the National Guard or reserve in the pay grades listed above.
  • Spouses who have completed high school or obtained a GED.
  • Spouses who have financial assistance documents approved before the active-duty service member’s date of separation or the active-duty service member’s release from Title 10 military orders.

Here are some key features of the MyCAA program:

  • Eligibility – The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship program is open to spouses of active-duty service members, National Guard and reserve members under qualifying Title 10 orders in pay grades E-1 through E-9, W-1 through W-3 and O-1 through O-3.
  • Portability – Portable careers that can travel with military spouses is the main focus.
  • Covered Expenses – Financial assistance can be put toward certifications, licenses, associates degrees, and testing that expand a military spouse’s employment opportunities.
  • Easy Application – Applying for MyCAA is simple. It only requires setting up an online profile and establishing what the program refers to as an Education and Training Plan.

Also know that MyCAA funds can be used in conjunction with other military-affiliated educational benefits offered by schools and training companies. That means spouses could potentially combine multiple scholarship resources to reduce their education expenses even further.
