Earning Certifications What Those Letters After Your Name Mean

In so many cases, earning a professional certification allows you to add certain credentials to your name and title. The credentials appear as letters after your name. The PMP credential tells others that you are a Project Management Professional. If your name and title bear the PHR credential, you are a Professional in Human Resources.

But do you know what those letters really mean? Do you know why they matter, above and beyond the specific credentials they refer to? All those letters after your name mean that you are serious about becoming a specialist in your field. And that matters because employers want and need people who know what they are doing.

You Are the One They Need

Credentials for certifications you have obtained say something about you as a person. They say that you are the one that others need to do the job.

We don’t offer many courses for real estate professionals here at ProTrain, but there is a great article about certifications on the National Association of Realtors website that drives home the point of this post. You can read it here.

In a nutshell, the post explains how the real estate agent featured in the article set out to earn certain certifications that would enable her to target particular audiences. The agent will always work with any client who comes her way. But her credentials make her stand out in a crowd. When certain homebuyers, like military couples, need help from an agent who understands their unique circumstances, they look for someone with the right credentials. She is that someone.

Your current employer (if you’re working) may need people with some highly specialized skills. They look for employees with the right credentials. And if not your current employer, then another employer willing to bring you on and pay you what you’re worth because you have demonstrated a willingness for specialized training.

Not Just Another Employee

Credentials tell employers that you’re not just another employee putting in the time and taking home a paycheck. Both are essential to the employer-employee relationship, but time and money don’t tell the entire story. Excelling as a company relies heavily on finding the right people. Excelling as an employee means being one of those people.

Do you want your career to take you on a path of its choosing, or do you want to cut the path and bring your career along with you? That’s really the big question in all of this.

Whether you are a software developer, an HR specialist, a project manager or even a healthcare professional, your willingness to learn will directly impact everything about your working future. Do not settle for being just another employee. Be the employee with specialized knowledge that sets you apart from the crowd.
